Last year Wallpaper* celebrated its 10th anniversary, and in time-honoured fashion we wanted our favourite figures, from the many disciplines covered by the magazine’s content, to share in our celebrations. It goes without saying that Zaha featured prominently, embodying as she does the same driving principles that we pride ourselves on. Zaha’s contribution to our 10th year celebrations was two-fold. She was one of the 10 artists we approached to design a limited edition cover, and she was also chosen by Karl Lagerfeld as his architectural hero in our gargantuan ‘Power Couples’ feature for Wallpaper* 092 last October. Its great to see the museum so busy, and to see that architecture really does have the power to hook people who are not already converts. The Hadid wall of fly through images of the completed buildings has the audience transfixed by the scale of what she is building, and you can hear a constant stream of people go wow! when they first catch sight of the darkened first floor, and the chandelier. We have a constant stream of high profile visitors to show around.
James Purnell, the new culture minister came in for an hour during his first week in his new job, which certainly says a lot about the architectural literacy of the Brown government.

Great to see Hadid’s drawings for the exhibition turning into physical form as the installation takes shape. I realise now that this moment is what I really missed out on by giving up a career in architecture to become a critic. It’s magic, and every morning at the museum I start the day with a look at how far the work has gone. The museum now has what really feels like a fully fledged Zaha building on its first floor. Anyone who knows Zaha knows that the most fearful word in her vocabulary is “hello”. Or rather a gravelly, contemptuous, interrogatory “hel-lo-o?” whenever she encounters something particularly absurd. If it were possible to convey the full phonetic and expressive richness of this word in mere digital type “Hel-lo-o?” would be a great name for this blog, combining as it does, in the manner perfected my Marcus Fairs, the style of Hello! magazine with architectural revelation and the persona of ZH. I have been fascinated by Zaha Hadid’s drawings and creations, ever since an artist friend of mine intorduced me to a book on her early works. It’s quite ironic really, that an artist found her and completely got into what she does, as she herself is not an artist as such, but a building designer… The two seem so far removed, yet when I see her drawings, I see a mindset not a million miles away from some of my forward thinking graffiti contempories, such as Joker, Futura or She One.
The lines, the shapes, alot of which reflect letter shapes, are beautiful to look at and have a perpetual motion even though they’re 2 dimensional.
I am personally quite excited to see these drawings in the flesh and maybe I can even get Zaha out to paint a wall with me…
