Video interview with Zaha Hadid
Jul 3rd, 2007
Here is a short interview with Zaha that we conducted at the press preview of the exhibition last week. In it, Zaha talks about the exhibition, as well as about the difference between designing furniture and buildings, and the impact she feels her work has had on architecture. Above is a screen grab from the movie; the actual movie is below.
Camera and editing is by Gemma Coombs. Interview is by Marcus Fairs/dezeen.

This exhibition was disappointing because the architectural exhibits give no indication of the function of the buildings. Architecture is about form and function. We see the form here but we have no clues to the function. How then can we judge how well the design is going to work? We can only make a judgement on how we like the shapes she uses. A less minimalist approach to labelling exhibits would be helpful.

The exhibition is great, and very interesting. I am a bussiness student at imperial college and we came here to look at designs and try to inspire ourselfs, and I think it worked!

I found this display very inspiring. It was a great help for ideas as i am a bussiness student at imperial college, and we are required to invent something. This was very good to think about different shapes and materials used to.

The paintings and furniture were beautiful. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting a Zaha building (art museum is fantastic), and it was really quite nice. I have to say that as an architect and as a human being I hope that ‘Zaha Hadid’s architecture is NOT an inspiration to many architecture students’. The world only really needs 4 or 5 Zaha’s (Gehrys/Morphosis/etc) to build large pieces of art that also serve as buildings. These forms are indeed beautiful and new, but they rarely serve a great purpose. They can critically aclaimed, sexy buildings- but they are also self-selving pieces (for Zaha, for the clients, and for the privileged people that get to enjoy her museums, cultural centers, and private mansions). The problem is that when the major architecture magazines and design musuems focus on form-driven architects (like Zaha), students around the world drool and dream of becoming just like them…. and we choose to chase form alone….
Wouldn’t it be great if the Design Museum focused on a builder that is pushing the boundary on the social responsibility of architecture?
